7 Questions to Ask Before You Pay for a Single Lead

Every lead-gen company says their leads are "high quality." That's not a useful filter — almost nobody advertises the opposite. What's useful is asking specific questions and seeing how clearly (or evasively) they answer. Here's the list we'd use ourselves if we were the one buying.

1. Where do the leads actually come from?

Their own ad campaigns, a third-party marketplace, or a scraped/purchased list? These are very different products wearing the same label. A provider running their own campaigns can usually explain exactly how a lead is generated — if the answer is vague, that's worth noticing.

2. Exclusive, or shared — and if shared, with how many others?

Ask directly, not "is it quality" but "how many other companies will also receive this exact lead, and when." A clear number (including zero) is a good sign. A dodge is not.

3. What exactly counts as a replaceable lead?

Get the specifics before you pay for anything: invalid number, confirmed duplicate, outside your service area, homeowner says they never inquired — which of these are actually covered, and what's the window to report it?

4. Is there a contract, retainer, or minimum spend?

Some providers lock you into a monthly fee regardless of lead volume. Know this upfront, not after your first invoice.

5. Can you see a sample before committing real money?

A provider confident in their own lead quality should have no problem with a small trial batch before you're in for real volume.

6. How is consumer consent captured?

This matters more than it sounds — if you'll be calling or texting the lead, you want to know the homeowner actually agreed to be contacted, and by whom. A provider who can't answer this clearly is a compliance risk you're inheriting, not just a quality one.

7. What happens when you ask a tough question?

Honestly, this is the real test. Straight answers to all of the above — even when the honest answer is "it's shared" or "no refunds on aged leads" — tell you more than any pitch deck. A provider who gets defensive or vague is telling you something too.

We'd rather you ask us all seven of these before applying than find out the answers after you've already paid for leads. See our FAQ for where we stand on each one.
